The last weekend in August, Tye and I met up with Julia, Josh and their eighteen month old son Max. Josh and Julia are an outdoorsy couple who wanted the Alberta landscape to figure into their family photographs, so we decided to make a day trip out to Canmore and the scenic Rocky Mountains.Despite the cold and rainy weather, we were excited to hit the road and get out of Calgary! Tye and I love Love shooting in Kananaskis Country. The scenery is beautiful and varied. There are emerald coloured lakes, expansive mountain views and lush green forests.
Photoshoots featuring toddlers always keep me on my toes. I has a blast chasing Max around and capturing all of his kooky little expressions. Looking at the photos below, you must agree that Max makes some of the cutest expressions you have ever seen. He was happy as a clam exploring the mountains, throwing rocks in the water and chasing wasps!
Keeping both kids and parents entertained and engaged in activities really helps Tye and I capture the most authentic and interesting family portraits. We find that having families engage in an activity helps everyone relax and enjoy each other’s company.
We love it when families we are capturing enjoy moments together and forget that they are being followed around by two crazy photographers. When families are lost in the moment, it allows us to focus on real emotion and storytelling.
Towards the end of the shoot, my husband Eric and son Luca came to meet us at the park. Just outside the park we found this amazing fort and couldn’t resist throwing the little boys inside for a photo. Nothing screams boyhood more than two little guys playing outside in a fort!
If you are looking to book your own family photos, we still have four mini session spots available for late September and early October.
